EDOX: The Paratrooper’s Watch (Skydiver Collection)

EDOX over the years has gained a reputation as a ‘water champion’, creating timepieces with excellent water resistance. So, it was no surprise that a mysterious drawing found in the archives of Edox, rekindled an old legend – THE EDOX SKYDIVER.

The new SkyDiver pays tribute to the brand’s 135-year history as well as the brand’s connoisseur for fine military timepieces. Rumoured to be launched following a Swiss Colonel secret request in 1973, the sky diver collection pays homage to paratroopers and the extreme conditions they might face- on land, air or sea. Well, it is said in August 1973 the Edox Skydiver was handed over to each paratrooper at a ceremony in the Swiss Alps. However, we do not know if this tale is a fact or just a made-up story. But over the years, the collection has evolved and is in gear for the new generation of fans. It adjusted the look and the materials but kept the Spirit of the 70s. Now, the collection is still water-resistant up to 300 metres/30 ATM and equipped with a screw down crown. Today we review the latest flagship model that was launched in 2019, with original photos by Edox.

The Skydiver collection may not be may have not been pre-eminent amongst the watch enthusiasts, but it is nonetheless a thoroughly convincing dive watch. It’s classic and vintage look has won over the hearts of many people.

Its emerald green diving bezel is perfectly matched with the dark green dial to give a strong “military look”. Its title of the watch is also written in dial using a retro front to enhance its vintage vibe. Also, the watch has a case diameter of 42mm, and case depth is 11.5m, which is rather contemporary in size. These attributes suit the 20th century dive-watch aesthetics and features. To further elevate the watch, the panel cover is made of 2 millimetres of sapphire crystals and the case back is made of stainless steel, making the watch extremely durable and scratch resistant even in the toughest weather conditions. The hour indices and hands are coated with Superluminova X1 which guarantees the hands and indices to be readable even in the lowest light.

The Mercedes hour hand and the pencil-like minute hand are a classic styling of dive watches of that time and completes the design of the heritage timepiece. Powering the hours, minutes, seconds, and date is an outsourced automatic three-hand Swiss movement calibre 80 movement. The movement was well-loved by watch enthusiasts because it is so accurate and reliable. Moreover, the screw-down case back is embellished with a paratrooper’s emblem to show appreciation to the paratroopers. Lastly, the watch is integrated with crown guards and is paired with a stainless-steel bracelet that feels good on the skin. The comfort level of wearing the watch would be even higher when it is worn on its supple leather strap, creating a successful retro look for daily wear.
