Edox: Geoscope Limited Edition-The Collectors favourite

by Timepiece Atelier on Aug 17th, 2021

The Edox Geoscope Limited edition is, without a doubt, one of the most recognized and rare watches that Edox has ever made.

Introduced in 1970s, Edox proudly introduced the“Geoscope” as the world’s first genuine “worldtimer” wristwatch. It covers all time-zone simultaneously, the position of the sun, providing timekeeping for almost 50 different cities around the world as well as local time. With these features combined with the bold and unique appearance of this watch, it has instantly become one of the most highly sought models and a watch collector's favourite.

The original Geoscope’s unique colourful planisphere dial showed the world map as viewed from the South Pole, where the Southern hemisphere is at the centre of the dial. The cities of the world are represented by red dots on the world map. As a world-timer watch launched in the early 1970s, a period when mass tourism developed on a scale never previously experienced, the watch spoke to the aspirations of a populace with an insatiable thirst for wanderlust to explore the most far-flung ends of the earth up to the South Pole.

Instead of a normal date wheel, this model has an inner bezel that rotates, displaying 24 divisions (for the 24 main time zones on earth) making one complete revolution every 24 hours. The watch also featured a GMT indicator and International Date Line. Powered by the Calibre 2774 automatic movement, the original Edox Geoscope featured two crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock and the Edox “hourglass” logo at 12 o’clock.

Now, 45 years later, the iconic Edox Geoscope has returned to captivate a new generation of watch connoisseurs and explorers of the world with an updated modern look, but this time, representing a real accomplishment of a “conquest” of a great terrain - the North Pole.

The latest Edox Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition pays tribute to the renowned Geoscope model in the 70s. It is an updated version of the original classic. It features a large generous stainless steel case at 46mm in diameter versus the original at 42mm. The latest Edox Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition retains the colourful planisphere world map dial of 1970 original, but this time as viewed from the North Pole, as a homage to world renowned Austrian free diver under ice, Christian “The Iceman” Redl. It marks his triumphant accomplishment as one of the first humans to free dive under the polar ice cap in the geographic North Pole.

In the latest Edox Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition, the blue and white 24-hour inner scale serves as a reference the hours for the second time zone. Local time is told by regular hour and minute hands.

Compared to the original, the new Edox Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition comes with a date indicator at 6 o’clock, set by the pusher at 8 o’clock, which did not feature in the original. The pusher at 3 o’clock sets local time, while the pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock set the second time zone clockwise and anti-clockwise, respectively.

Therefore, like Redl, the Edox Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition characterizes the persistence and determination of the human spirit to explore and conquer new terrains. The view of the world map from the North Pole is a reminder that mankind can overcome any challenge faced. This is just the sort of challenge that fits the ethos of Edox – dedication to its craft, driven by passion and timing for champions.

Powered by an automatic movement, with a module for GMT functions, the new EDOX Geoscope North Pole Limited Edition is domed with anti-reflective sapphire crystal and is water resistance of up to up to 200 meters (660 feet).

It is an assiduously re-imagination of a classic, highly desirable collectible timepiece in the Swiss watch industry. The orange-hour markers continue to pay tribute to those found on the original. It is a memorable collectible for a new generation of intrepid adventurers of the world who has an adventurous spirit and deep love for the world.
