Part 3: My First Tattoo @mrtakoboy
Meet Eugene Tan, also known as @mrtakoboy on Instagram. Here he shares with us his first experiences with Arbutus and how Arbutus Dual Time Skeleton AR1905RWF is an ideal choice for his first mechanical watch.
Why did you want to get a tattoo?
I got my first tattoo 1 week right after I ORD which is on the 11th of September because I’ve always wanted to get a tattoo of a dumbo. I’m a dumbo lover and collected from limited edition watches to tissue paper packs! So other than my love for dumbo I love anime too! I have different tattoos of anime characters because they all hold a personality which I really like!
What’s the meaning behind your tattoo?
My tattoos of dumbo is pretty simple it’s just love, but I do have a tattoo of my dog because she’s someone that kept me company through the darkest days of my life, and for the anime tattoos it’s more like a reminder to myself telling myself to always be kind and never hold grudges.
How do people usually react when they see your tattoo(s) for the first time?
People usually get shocked after seeing my tattoo for the first time because they feel I don’t have the face of a tattooed man, so I’ll usually laugh it off. I remember the first reaction I got from my mum and granny really made me laugh. My granny said “Omg is this real” and she told me to bring the fish descaling tool because she wanted to remove the tattoo. As for my mum, she gave my fresh tattoo a slap saying since you like pain so much, I just inflicted you pain please pay me! It was both funny and painful haha!
How are tattoos seen today?
I would say tattoos are seen as art nowadays but definitely there will still be people who see tattoos as a bad thing but it’s slowly accepted day by day. I would say get a tattoo because you really want it and not out of impulse because that tattoo is probably gonna to stay with you for your whole life!
Could you share with your followers what they need to know before getting tattoo:
What type of style and design did you look for?
I don’t have a fixed style that I like but my tattoos are mostly portraits of anime and neo-traditional art!
What’s the size and which body part is the tattoo on?
The placement is from my arms to my ribs. Because I wanted to try out my pain tolerance with no specific meaning! Hehe
What do you look for in a tattoo artist (or shop)?
I often visit traditioncollectives IG (@porky.inks and @lionelngtattoo) other than that it will be blackalchemy’s @keith.inks because they are more like my friend which makes the session interesting and pleasant!
What is a tattoo session like?
A tattoo session is usually a consultation via WhatsApp or Instagram! Once you’re ready you can meet the artist 1 to 1 and place a deposit for the artist to start their magic!
The first one was pain AF because the placement is on the rib! Like I said I wanted to test out my pain tolerance and trust me it was painful! But at the end of the sessions it was a relief and I got a good night sleep!
Before the session remember not to drink alcohol and remember to have enough sleep! It would be best to have your lunch or breakfast before the session so you have strength to tolerate the pain!!
The after care is simple! Just remember to keep your tattoo dry and after 3-5 days use moisturiser on the tattoo to help with the healing! If you need a more in-depth explanation, do google as I’m definitely not a professional HAHA! My first tattoo was about 18cm and I paid around $400! So tattoos are not that cheap, know what you want!
